This 27th April, 2024 South Vancouver became a hub of celebration as the Filipino community gathered to honor Lapu-Lapu Day, commemorating the legacy of the Indigenous warrior recognized as the first hero by Filipinos. This significant occasion was officially recognized last year when B.C. declared April 27th as Lapu-Lapu Day, marking it as a special day for the over 170,000 Filipino-Canadians in the province. Filipino BC, in partnership with Hungerford Properties, announced their commitment to exploring the feasibility of this project, representing a tangible step forward. RJ Aquino, chair of Filipino BC, highlighted the alignment of values and the dedication shown by Hungerford Properties to community engagement.
Supported by government funding commitments and endorsements from Vancouver’s city council and mayor, including a $250,000 allocation for planning and public engagement from the province last year, the proposed Filipino Community Centre holds promise for the community’s future. Additionally, the 2024 federal budget promised further funding for the project.
The announcement of this partnership took place amidst the lively Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party, a celebration featuring Filipino food, music, film, fashion, and sports. Lapu-Lapu Day serves as a poignant reminder of the Filipino community’s resilience and cultural pride, commemorating Lapu-Lapu’s victory against Spanish colonization in 1521.
