Brief Background on First Nations, Inuit, and Métis

First Nations

The term “First Nations” refers to the various Indigenous peoples who inhabit what is now Canada, excluding the Inuit and Métis. First Nations communities are incredibly diverse, with over 600 distinct bands recognized by the Canadian government, each with its own unique culture, language, and traditions. Historically, First Nations peoples have lived across the vast landscapes of Canada, from the Atlantic to the Pacific and into the northern territories. They have rich cultural heritages, including complex social structures, spiritual beliefs, and a deep connection to the land.

Inuit

The Inuit are Indigenous people who primarily live in the Arctic regions of Canada, including Nunavut, the Northwest Territories, northern Quebec (Nunavik), and Labrador. They are known for their unique way of life adapted to the harsh Arctic environment, including skills in hunting, fishing, and traditional crafts such as carving and sewing. Métis
