💡Quick fact: Desertification is the transformation of fertile land into desert due to drought, deforestation, or inappropriate agriculture. It degrades land, reduces vegetation, causes soil erosion, and diminishes biodiversity, impacting food security, water resources, and livelihoods worldwide.
The Urgency of Our Mission
Since 2000, the number and duration of droughts have increased by 29%. Without urgent action, droughts could impact over three-quarters of the world’s population by 2050. This underscores the critical importance of land restoration, a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). This global initiative calls for the protection and revival of ecosystems, which is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The World Environment Day 2024 Call to Action
World Environment Day 2024, held annually on June 5 and led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), focuses on land restoration, halting desertification, and building drought resilience under the slogan
“Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”

This year’s event, hosted by Saudi Arabia, also marks the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. The sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will take place in Riyadh from December 2 to 13, 2024.

To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50% within the decade, and plastic waste flowing into aquatic ecosystems will nearly triple by 2040.
